Southampton Church's Women Promote Heart Health

With February designated as “Heart Month,” the Southampton Seventh-day Adventist Church Women’s Ministries Department used the opportunity to launch the start of their program with a potluck luncheon on Sabbath, February 23. Gaynell Hayward, Women’s Ministries leader for the church, and her team put together a hearty meal and a Sabbath afternoon program in the fellowship hall at the church. The décor couldn’t have been more inviting. Hundreds of tiny heart-shaped confetti covered the red and white tablecloths while red, pink, and white balloons filled the room.

The presentation, entitled, “Heart-to-Heart,” promoted women’s heart health to the more than 80 women who attended the lunch-and-learn. Each woman received a memorable bookmark or a scented T candle. There were many surprises in the form of spot prizes for those whose seats were specially labeled with hearts. Three individuals, Vernette Evans-Roberts, Linda Samuels, and Shirley Webbe, who was visiting from Boston, received gift-filled baskets.

After an enjoyable meal, Evelyn Brown a registered nurse employed at the KEMH Cardiac Care, presented a PowerPoint presentation. She urged women to get tested and to know their numbers (high blood pressure and cholesterol readings). Bermuda statistics show that each month at least four women suffer heart attacks. She mentioned that heart attacks prove more fatal for women than men because women appear to tolerate pain and often don’t take the severity of their pain seriously. She emphasized how exercise and a high-fiber diet are vital ingredients for a healthy heart. She also advised all women to get moving as a step toward reducing their risk of heart disease.

It was a heart-warming experience. Hayward spoke of the opportunity to provide outreach in the community and a Mother’s Day initiative that will benefit mothers in Ethiopia. Feedback received indicates that many were blessed and are looking forward to future opportunities for education, empowerment, enjoyment, and encouragement. The Women’s Ministries team would like to thank those who made the event a success through their donations, cooking, or service.
